The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an orthodontic evaluation by age seven, and Dr. Paul and Dr. Aurelia agree.
That first visit does not usually mean your child is ready for braces. It gives us a chance to look at how the teeth and jaws are developing and make sure everything is moving in the right direction.
In many cases, that early visit simply marks the start of an observation period. If we spot signs of crowding, bite problems, or jaw imbalance, we can track those changes over time and step in when treatment will help the most.

How Early Treatment Works
Phase 1 treatment begins when a child still has a mix of baby and adult teeth, and we see a problem that cannot wait. The goal isn’t to perfect every detail of the smile at this stage. The goal is to guide growth, improve function, and make future treatment more straightforward.
Growth, Space, & Bite Development
Depending on your child’s needs, Phase 1 treatment may help create space for incoming teeth, address bite problems, or support healthier jaw development. This phase often lasts about 8 to 12 months, followed by regular check-ins as the remaining adult teeth come in.
Finish Strong With Phase 2
Once most of the permanent teeth have erupted, we can determine whether Phase 2 treatment will help refine the bite and finish the smile.
